Nonlinear optical spectroscopy of chiral molecules.

چکیده
We review nonlinear optical processes that are specific to chiral molecules in solution and on surfaces. In contrast to conventional natural optical activity phenomena, which depend linearly on the electric field strength of the optical field, we discuss how optical processes that are nonlinear (quadratic, cubic, and quartic) functions of the electromagnetic field strength may probe optically active centers and chiral vibrations. We show that nonlinear techniques open entirely new ways of exploring chirality in chemical and biological systems: The cubic processes give rise to nonlinear circular dichroism and nonlinear optical rotation and make it possible to observe dynamic chiral processes at ultrafast time scales. The quadratic second-harmonic and sum-frequency-generation phenomena and the quartic processes may arise entirely in the electric-dipole approximation and do not require the use of circularly polarized light to detect chirality. They provide surface selectivity and their observables can be relatively much larger than in linear optical activity. These processes also give rise to the generation of light at a new color, and in liquids this frequency conversion only occurs if the solution is optically active. We survey recent chiral nonlinear optical experiments and give examples of their application to problems of biophysical interest.

Theoretical study of magnetic susceptibility and optical activity of small molecules containing one chiral center
In the first part of this work, correlation between optical activity and elements of magnetic susceptibility tensor (MST) for five classes of model small molecules containing a single chiral center has been studied using quantum computational techniques at DFT-B3LYP level of theory with 6-311G basis set. Several molecular properties are used to reduce the MST elements prior to the examination o...
متن کاملOptical Chirality Enhancement in Twisted Arrays of Plasmonic Nano-rods
An important property of electromagnetic fields, which arises from the interaction between fields and chiral molecules, is called optical chirality. By enhancing this field property, while maintaining constant input power, we are able to increase absorption of circularly polarized light by chiral molecules of a certain handedness. This enhancement is achieved through the use of achiral plasmoni...
متن کاملChiral rotational spectroscopy
We introduce chiral rotational spectroscopy, a technique that enables the determination of the orientated optical activity pseudotensor components BXX , BYY , and BZZ of chiral molecules, in a manner that reveals the enantiomeric constitution of a sample and provides an incisive signal even for a racemate. Chiral rotational spectroscopy could find particular use in the analysis of molecules tha...
متن کاملInspecting chiral molecules by Raman optical activity spectroscopy
Raman optical activity (ROA) is a relatively new method combining the variability of scattering experiments with the structural sensitivity of chiral spectroscopy. Typically, ROA can be employed to determine absolute configuration (AC) of organic compounds, chiral metal complexes, and conformation of biologically relevant chiral molecules in solution. The present review covers the latest theore...
متن کاملThe H2O Helix: The Chiral Water Superstructure Surrounding DNA
The double helix structure of DNA comes as close as it gets in science to a household brand. Results reported by Petersen and co-workers uncover a new structure buried just at the surface of DNA: a chiral, helical superstructure of water molecules (Figure 1). The authors applied second-order nonlinear optical spectroscopy to observe the collective orientation of these waters. They propose that ...
